Did you know that scientists from the University of Georgia estimate the number of bacteria on our planet to be five million trillion trillion - There are far more bacteria on earth than there are stars in the universe. Of those five million trillion trillion pathogens, approximately 1400 are human pathogens and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has classified 18 of these pathogens as having the potential to cause a global pandemic. Learn about each of these eighteen pathogens and the risks they pose to our way of life and how society’s continued inappropriate use of antibiotics exponentially increases the likelihood that a global pandemic will occur in our lifetime. Antibiotic Stewardship Programs will remain an important component in the reduction of inappropriate antibiotics in healthcare. If we continue the status quo, by the year 2050, 10 million people a year will die from multidrug-resistant organisms. Find out in this session how you can be part of the solution to this MDRO crisis before it’s too late!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify 3 ways an Antibiotic Stewardship Program can improve antibiotic use
  2. Identify the differences between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  3. Identify the 3 most urgent bacteria from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
